Foreign Text

Tagging words or phrases in a different language, planned for v2.

The default language for all files in English. Words or phrases in other languages should be tagged with @xml:lang. This attribute can be attached to a <p> or other tag. When indicating a word or phrase within an English-language passage, use <term>.

Where the word or phrase concerned is already distinguished from the rest of the text by virtue of its function (for example, because it is a title, a technical term, a quotation, a mentioned word, etc.) then add the @xml:lang attribute to specify additionally that its language distinguishes it from the surrounding text. Any element in the TEI scheme may take an @xml:lang attribute.
