Machine-readable transcriptions of historical editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica
We are releasing full-text versions in plain-text and TEI-XML formats of historical editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica, suitable for text mining. Download links are posted on the individual edition pages as releases become available.
The collection includes four editions, from 1797-1911.1 The print editions are:
- 3rd ed. 18 vols. + 2 suppl. vols. Edinburgh: A. Bell and C. MacFarquhar, 1788-1797.
- 7th ed. 21 vols. Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1830-1842.
- 9th ed. 25 vols. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1875-1889. (Authorized edition.)
- 11th ed. 29 vols. NY: Cambridge University Press, 1910-1911.
